West Sussex Active Travel Strategy and Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan

The draft West Sussex Active Travel Strategy (ATS) and Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) were produced following the adoption of the new West Sussex Transport Plan in 2022, the publication of Gear Change (the government’s vision for active travel) in 2020, and the adoption of LCWIPs by a number of district and brough councils. Active Travel England (ATE) was established in 2022 and is now responsible for the Department for Transport’s active travel budget. The new documents will replace the West Sussex Walking and Cycling Strategy 2016-2026.

The ATS and LCWIP will support future funding bids. Intra-urban routes featuring in the various district and borough LCWIPs will be considered alongside the six long-distance inter-community routes featured in the West Sussex LCWIP. This will create a county-wide network of LCWIP routes that will be prioritised for future progression.

The draft ATS and LCWIP were the subject of a public consultation exercise between 22 September and 15 November 2023. A schools consultation took place between 9 October and 15 December 2023 to ensure the views of children and young people could be considered.

The Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport will be asked to consider the outcome of the consultation and approve a final version of the West Sussex Active Travel Strategy and Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan.
